Pope Francis has convoked the General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops to meet in October 2023 to discuss how the Church can more fully embrace "Synodality." The themes of the Synod are: Communion, Participation, and Mission.
Synodality, in this context, means that the Bishops of the Church actively assist and participate with the Holy Father in the pastoring of the Universal Church. In order for this to happen well, every Bishop must be in dialogue with his flock in his particular Church, understanding their faith, strengths, concerns, and doubts.
To prepare for this Synod, the Holy Father is opening a two year process for all the faithful to journey together with their Bishop, in prayer, discernment and dialogue. Each Diocese will then participate with all the Dioceses in their Conference, and then all the Bishops will gather around the results of the dialogues.
We stand before You, Holy Spirit, as we gather together in Your name.
With You alone to guide us, make Yourself at home in our hearts;
Teach us the way we must go and how we are to pursue it.
We are weak and sinful; do not let us promote disorder.
Do not let ignorance lead us down the wrong path nor partiality influence our actions.
Let us find in You our unity so that we may journey together to eternal life and not stray from the way of truth and what is right.
All this we ask of You, who are at work in every place and time,
in the communion of the Father and the Son, forever and ever.
Amen.
