Reverend Joseph Charles Underwood, a priest of the Diocese of Birmingham, passed away Oct. 30 at the age of 97. He was born in Birmingham to Jack and Mae Epperson Underwood. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and later graduated from Howard College, now Samford University, with a degree in economics. He worked as a CPA prior to his conversion and calling to the priesthood. Upon graduating from Mount Saint Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg, MD, he was ordained to the priesthood in May of 1962. He served as an associate pastor in several parishes including St. Stanislaus in Wylam, St. Margaret’s in Birmingham, St. Mary’s in Ft. Walton Beach, and St. Bede’s in Montgomery. In 1968, he was named pastor of St. Thomas the Apostle Parish in Montevallo and would later serve as pastor at St. Theresa’s in Midfield and St. Stanislaus in Wylam. Father Underwood retired from active ministry in 1994 after serving the people of Alabama and northern Florida for over 32 years. On Monday, Nov. 5, a Rosary was offered for him at 9 a.m. at the Cathedral St. Paul followed by Visitation and Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Interment was at Forest Hill Cemetery.
