Sadly, the Diocese of Birmingham announces the passing of Reverend James Handerhan, Sr., 68.
Father Handerhan was born on Jan. 9, 1951 in Perth Amboy, NJ to Roland and Susan Handerhan. He is preceded in death by his father and his dear wife of 28 years, Phyllis Marlene. He is survived by his mother, his sisters Patty, Jackie, Susan, JoAnn, and Peggy, his brother Thomas, his son James II (Rebecca), his grandchildren Sean (Meghin), Katie (Howard), and Colin, and his great grandchildren Clary, Felicity, and Eliana. Father Handerhan was a veteran of the US Army and worked for the FBI, City Finance, and City Wholesale. After the death of his wife, he discerned a calling and entered studies for the priesthood. Ordained as a priest in June of 2016, Father Handerhan served as an associate pastor at St. John the Baptist parish in Madison and was the pastor of both St. Charles Borromeo parish in Jacksonville and St. Joachim parish in Piedmont.
Mass of Christian Burial was Thursday, August 22, 3:00 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. Paul, 2120 3rd Avenue North, Birmingham, Alabama, 35203, with interment in Gardendale at Moncrief Cemetery, 2055 Moncrief Road, Gardendale, Alabama, 35071.
