Founder of Diocesan Office of Black Catholic Ministry dies at age 75

Sister Rita Washington, SFCC July 1, 1943 – August 13, 2018

Sister Rita Washington, a native of Mobile, Alabama, and a resident of Montgomery, Alabama, died at a local hospital in Montgomery on Monday, Aug. 13. Sister Rita served in the Diocese of Birmingham at St. Martin de Porres Church and School in Gadsden for three years and in Birmingham as the founder and Diocesan Director of the Office of Black Catholic Ministry for eight years.

Beloved Bishop Emeritus David Edward Foley, third bishop of the Diocese of Birmingham in Alabama, peacefully passed away at the St. John Vianney Residence for Priests in Birmingham, Alabama surrounded by friends at 7:01 p.m on Tuesday, April 17, 2018 at the age of 88.

Reverend J. Peter Sheehan, 91, retired priest of the Diocese of Birmingham, passed away Monday, February 26, 2018, in Sebring, Florida.  Father Sheehan served in many parishes during his tenure, including St. Thomas, Montevallo; St. Anthony, Birmingham; and St. Ann, Decatur.  His final assignment before his retirement in 1991 was the Cathedral of St. Paul.

CULLMAN - Sister Margaret Frederick, a Benedictine Sister of Sacred Heart Monastery in Cullman, died on Dec. 22, at the age of 82. Reception of the Body with Vespers of the Dead was held Dec. 26, in Sacred Heart Monastery Chapel followed by visitation. Rev. Stanley B. Klauck entered into eternal life on Saturday, June 10, 2017, age 95 at Alexian Village, Milwaukee. Father Stan was born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, April 4, 1922, to the late Jacob John and Catherine (nee Doyle) Klauck.
