Diocese co-sponsors an educational experience for Black History Month
In the early stages of the pandemic, the Office of Black Catholic Ministry organized a three-day conference focusing on Pierre Toussaint, Elizabeth Lange, Henriette Delille, Augustus Tolton, Julia Greeley, and Thea Bowman. The six Black Catholics who ministered at various times throughout history in the United States currently have sainthood causes open. When time came for the conference in October of 2020, it was canceled due to the pandemic.
In response to the canceled conference, James Watts, director of the Diocesan Office of Black Catholic Ministry, worked with the National Association of Black Catholic Administrators (NABCA) to find an alternative, which they found in Chicogo. The Archdiocese of Chicago along with co-sponsors the Diocese of Columbus, the Diocese of Richmond, the Archdiocese of Denver, the Diocese of Birmingham and the Tolton Spirituality Center has planned a virtual month-long series, "Sharing our Story: An Enduring Faith," to catechize and educate about the contributions to the word made by these six candidates for sainthood. The series is set to begin Feb. 6. For more information, visit:
